Stygian Owl


The Stygian Owl is a fairly large owl measuring about 16 inches in lengh with a wingspan of about 24 inches. It looks a little like a long eared-owl with its long ear tufts and bright yellow eyes. The upper parts of the Stygian Owl are mostly dark brown in color while the undersides are mostly white in color.

This strictly nocturnal owl can be found in forests and semi-open landscape areas from Mexico and Central America to South America as far south as the Southern parts of Brazil. It has also been spotted in some parts of Texas.

The Stygian Owl makes its nests in trees using the abandoned nests of larger birds. It also sometimes uses shallow depressions on the ground. The female usually lays 2 eggs.

The diet of the Stygian Owl consists of other birds, bats, small mammals, and insects.
