Little Owl
The Little Owl is one of the smallest owls measuring only about 8 inches in length with a wingspan of about 22 inches.
It is related to the burrowing owl and bears a close resemblance to its American counterpart. The Little owl has a flat head, short tail, and is greyish brown in color with white markings.
Although the Little Owl is mainly nocturnal, it does most of its hunting at dawn and dusk. Its diet consists mainly of insects such as worms, beetles, moths, and grasshoppers but it also hunts lizards, birds, and small mammals. It is also one of the few owls that eat vegetation.
The Little Owl can be found throughout Europe and Asia ranging from Britain to China and as far south as North Africa. It lives in woodlands, fields, wasteland, coastal and semi-desert areas making its nests in wall cavities and hollow trees. The female lays 3-5 eggs, which take about 28 days to hatch.
