Northern Hawk Owl
The Northern Hawk owl is a medium-sized owl measuring about 14 inches in length with a wingspan of
about about 33 inches. It has a large, rounded head with yellow eyes and pale facial disks with
dark borders. This long tailed owl is dark brown in color with a barred breast.
Unlike most other owls, the Northern Hawk Owl is very active in the daytime. It lives mainly in the
boreal forests and can be found in Alaska and parts of Canada making its nests in tree cavitys.
The female lays 3-7 eggs which take 25-30 days to hatch. The young owls leave the nest after 25-35
days but are still protected by their parents, which have been known to feircly attack intruders when
protecting their young.
The diet of the Northern Hawk Owl consists mainly of voles, mice and lemmings but it will also eat
birds during the winter months when rodents are harder to find.
